The oxides on the surface is the main issue when welding Magnesium, to obtain good results the surface should be cleaned mechanically with a aluminum or stainless steel brush. For chemically cleaning a solution of 24 oz. Chromic acid, 5-1/3 oz. ferric nitrate and 1/16 oz. potassium fluoride in enough water to make one gallon. Bring the solution to 70-90° F then immerse the part for 3 minutes and rinse in hot water. Make sure that both the welding joint and the filler rod are properly cleaned. For the Tig process a Tungsten Zirconium electrode should be used preferable on AC current with pure Argon to offer proper melt pool protection. Argon / Helium mixture may be used when increased temperature and cleaning action is preferred.
ER 310
Alloy ER 310 is used for the welding of stainless steels of similar composition in wrought or cast form. The weld deposit is fully austenitic and calls for low heat during welding. This filler metal can be used for dissimilar welding.
ER 70S-6
Type ER 70S-6 is a wire with higher levels of Deoxidizers welding of steels with moderate amounts of scale or rust. (Mn & Si) compared to other carbon steel wires. This wire is suitable for welding of steels with moderate amounts of scale or rust.
For Mig welding use Carbon Dioxide or Argon + Co2 or Argon + 2% Oxygen as shielding gases.
ER 80S-B2
ER 80S-B2 is for gas metal arc welding of 1¼ chromium, ½ molybdenum steels, which are used in high temperature applications. 300ºF min. preheat and inter-pass are recommended during the welding operation.
ER 70S-4
ER 70S-4 has a higher content of manganese and silicon than ER70S-3. This gives it greater weld metal strength and good quality weld deposits in semi-killed or rimmed steels. This wire may be used with CO2, Argon-Oxygen mixtures, or mixtures of the two. ER70S-4 has excellent fluidity and wettability resulting in a very smooth bead contour on butt and fillet welds. This wire can be used on all CO2 semi-automatic and automatic equipment.
